STATEMENT
How are principles of abstraction applied in the disciplines of Science to clarify, explain and understand the natural world?
The techniques and methods that I employ synthesize painterly and improvisational approaches of expressionism with the rendered and didactic conventions of zoological illustration, text book diagrams and field guides. Drawing upon sources from a diversity of naturalist traditions, I seek to cultivate an artistic approach rooted equally in the observational experience of natural "objects" and the excavation of the cumulative, emotive memories these experiences yield.
I begin with photographs documenting trees near my home in Philadelphia or in my travels. Experiments with the layering of printed images, drawings and marks painted with transparent and opaque media yield a playful, unfolding approach to revealing and hiding arboreal form and space . Observe, record, classify, react, remember, forget, imagine, repeat.
In composing each piece as an intentional grouping, site-specific installation, artist’s book or assemblage, I seek to convey the rhythmic, movements or meditative undercurrents of a forest walk.
